Korean BLs Touching on Mental Illness 2024

Left: Jazz for two Right: Boys Be Brave Both Korean BL Dramas

The start of 2024 has produced a lot of BL Dramas touching on a lot of more sensitive topics and really pushing the envelope on the obstacles these character face to get to Love. I've notice over the course of a few years Korean BL Dramas has come a very long way on how they show intimacy between characters and also the context of the messy they provide. Jazz for two and Boy be Brave were to series which in their own way tapped on the topic of Mental Illness and Suicide. They stories are rather captivating in their own right.

Jazz for two is a love story between SeHeon and Han Tae who finds love with each other through their passion of Jazz music. These characters really struggle with certain issues that made it hard for some to see the bright side of a situation and the love that was right in front of them. When it comes to Han Tae he struggled with the death of his brother (committed suicide) wondering if he was weak or if he could have done more so he wouldn't of felt so alone to take his own life. SeHeon struggled with breaking free from his controlling dad and being able to play the music he enjoys. Both characters eventually see each others raw form and what they truly needed to feel supported. They deliver Huntayyy LOL! We later find that SeHeon's older brother had a past friendship/budding situationship with Taejoon (Han Tae Brother) which also cause some issues for the budding couple, but also gave some comfort to both to eventually move on.

Boy Be brave is a love story about Kim Jin Woo and Jung Ki Sub who have known of each other for awhile and one day Ki Sub decided to move in Jin Woo place with him knowing. They go through a lot of funny light hearted banter and decide to come up with a contact that gave Ki Sub a week to make Jin Woo like him. Jin Woo already likes him but refuse to entertain Ki Sub do to hi player ways and his inability to care for another persons feelings. Ki Sub is not aware that he really likes Jin Woo, he just knows he drawn to him and needs him to like him in a romantic type of way. With the help of jin Woo list of traits for a Lover Ki Sub goes on his mission to make him fall in love with him in the end he ends up learning why his dating history made him appear trashy. We learn Ki Sub was a people pleaser due to his chronic illness and we learn Jin Woo didn't want to be alone anymore (dad was to busy working not being an active father). These two eventually find out that each other is the first tangible thing they can have selfishly!

Now when it comes to the side couple in both series they do not get together. In Jazz for two Dojoon (Han Tae BFF) kiss/confess to Song Juha (School Bully) and experience a level of homophobia behind the actions. Eventually Juha does finally realize he may have feelings for Dojoon, but express he really doesn't know how to handle this situation and still not 100% on board with it. Juha express them being friends and being around each other are what he needs in the moment and that is how they end. In Boys Be Brave Choi Balg Eum (Ki Sub BFF) has a visit from someone in his past Ji In Ho who has returned to finish what they started back when they were in school together. Ji In Ho has been looking for Balg Eum since he left school with no warning and also confess that he still has strong feelings for him. As time go on you learn Balg Eum deals with a bad form of depression due to his childhood and how his family really struggled financially. Out of everyone Balg Eum is the friend who has to work many part time jobs and don't have the financial freedom his friends do. With this insecurity living rent free in his head he lashes out towards Ji In Ho whose honestly just trying to love him for who he is, but Balg Eum just can't see it. At the end Balg Eum confess to Ji In Ho while also letting him know he's not happy and uncomfortable when he is around him all because of Balg Eum not having as much or more money than Ji In Ho. Ji In Ho leaves still optimistic and agreeing to wait for him, but this one took the cake for me!!

At the end I understood why both couples didn't end together at the end their issues were not meant to be light hearted situations, but situations that require much mental work to fix. I enjoyed both series and if you would like more context you can check out our Podcast 🥰. Hope you guys enjoyed the read! Latas Beautiful People!!!!
